IMP AS A GUIDE FOR INDUSTRY 4.0

STRATEGIES

__________________________________________________________________

Or: Rethinking value chain logic…

__________________________________________________________________

Against the backdrop of increasing complexity, dynamism and diversity in variation, the process of complete digitization and the intelligent network of people, machines and things along the entire value chain of a product will become a vital factor in a company's ability to compete on a global level. It will also represent a growth opportunity for highly developed production facilities in Europe, in particular when 90 percent of worldwide business growth is already taking place outside of Europe.

By embracing Industry 4.0, Europe can keep high-tech products here and possibly even continue developing new ones. Industry 4.0 represents an opportunity to build new business models, design new products and generate new potential. If Europe views Industry 4.0 as a coherent ongoing development of high-tech manufacturing systems, then it will have a good chance of remaining competitive.

However…

…what most companies have already mastered, namely, the art of continuous improvement on tangible products, is a thing of the past. The digitally networked business world works differently. It's faster, more chaotic, unpredictable and much more closely bound to the customer. The IT-based new economy, cloud computing and big data are not just trends. With Industry 4.0 in place, they are merging with the "old economy" to form new business models.

So how do these business models of the future look? What are the basic requirements and what are the challenges for management?

One thing is certain: In order to take advantage of the enormous potential of growing networks – through the Internet of Things, machine-to-machine communication and Industry 4.0 – companies will have to rearrange their own organizations, processes, IT systems and even their own philosophies.
